Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Division (formally known as the Health  Dept.) responds to complaints within the Corporate Limits of the City of Hastings.  We enforce violations of the Nuisance Code, Chapter 18 and violations of the Stormwater/Illicit Discharge Code, Chapter 42 including but not limited to:

  • Trash/Garbage not contained in a closed trash container
  • Junk
  • Unregistered vehicles on private property
  • Inoperable vehicles on private property
  • Auto parts/unmaintained machinery/scrap metal
  • Indoor furniture/bedding in the yard or on the porch
  • Weeds/grass over 6 inches in height
  • Piled branches
  • Firewood not kept at least 6 inches above the ground
  • Excessive animal waste
  • Unmaintained swimming pools and stagnant water
  • Appliances and electronics located outside private property
  • Tires kept outside
  • Concrete washout in an area not solely designated and approved for washout purposes
  • Tracking of dirt/mud from construction sites onto public right-of-ways
  • Illicit discharges
  • Zoning Violations

Nuisance Violations are sometimes subject to Zoning District Uses.  An example would be unlicensed vehicles at a car dealership or salvage yard which are not in violation of the Nuisance Code because this is a specific use allowed in said district.

Vehicle violations on public streets are enforced by the Police Department.
