Auxiliary Operator Relief

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Shift Foreman, performs a variety of tasks required for the operation of a coal fired electrical generation facility on a rotating shift basis.  When scheduled, will assume responsibility of Operator and perform the duties of that position on that shift.  When on Relief basis, will perform work as assigned.  After qualifications are complete, duties are regularly performed on the a rotating shift basis.

 

EQUIPMENT / JOB LOCATION

Proficiency in the use and operation of equipment including but not limited to the following:

 

*hand tools                *power tools                 *plant intercom system             *computers

*telephone                 *two-way radio             *department vehicles

 

The work environment locations and characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job:

 

*hazardous conditions            *wet and/or humid conditions                   *elevated heights

*extreme heat/cold                 *airborne particles                                      *fumes

*hazardous chemicals             *moderate to elevated noise levels

 

Work is performed in a variety of settings both inside and outside of the power plant. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

 

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate various tools and equipment.

 

The employee is frequently required to:

 

*stand            *walk             *talk              *hear             *sit                *stoop             *kneel

*balance        *crouch         *climb           *push            *pull              *bend

*reach with arms and hands                       *ascend / descend stairs, ladders

*lift and/or move 50 pounds by self

*move or position items weighing up to 100 pounds

*use fingers to finger, handle, operate necessary tools and equipment, valves and controls

 

Vision requirements include:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

*Operates boiler fly ash removal and pulverizer pyrite removal systems.

*Inspects cooling tower for obstructions, broken slats, ice layers, proper cooling tower level, etc.

*Inspects and regulates water treatment systems for proper operation.

*Verifies proper lubrication of and operation of circulating water pumps, fans and motors.

*Reports unusual or abnormal conditions to Shift Foreman.

*Adheres to the safety standards and policies of Hastings Utilities.

*Performs maintenance and repairs on plant equipment when necessary.

*Cleans and maintains work areas.

*Prepares and keeps logs as necessary.

*Participates in formal or on the job training.

*Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with customers and fellow employees.

*Provides some training for other employees.

*During emergencies performs any duties that may be assigned or required.

*Performs related work as required and all other duties as assigned.

 

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

*May serve on various employee committees.

*Performs plant maintenance duties during outages or as assigned.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

This position requires knowledge, skill or the ability to obtain skill in the following areas:

 

*Skill in the operation of listed equipment.

*Knowledge of high pressure steam generation and electrical power plant equipment and principles.

*Considerable knowledge of the hazards and of necessary safety precautions applicable to work.

*Ability to withstand rigorous physical activity; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, customers and the general public; to react quickly, calmly and decisively in emergencies; to recognize malfunctions in equipment and to determine proper corrective action; to participate in plant maintenance activities; to work rotating shifts; to work according to a prescribed routine; and to maintain the necessary records.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of training, experience or education equivalent to completion of high school with some experience and/or knowledge of steam generation equipment; classes in algebra, science and shop desired.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

*Must reside within six miles of Hastings’ city limits.

*Must possess a valid driver’s license.
