SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Development Services Director supervises all aspects of the Building division including, both residential and commercial building plan reviews, inspections and building permit application services.  The Chief Building Official works with a high level of discretion, technical independence and minimal guidance while making decisions to assure public health, welfare and safety.  Performs and supervises skilled inspections of building construction and repair work to assure compliance with building, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and zoning ordinances and codes.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Provides technical building code advice to supervisor, administrator & political body; makes presentations to supervisors, boards, commissions, civic groups and the general public.
  • Participates in Development Review Team meetings in the review of new development and redevelopment proposals, annexation agreements, rezoning, conditional use and design review petitions.
  • Monitors changes in codes and legislation, new building materials and construction methods.  Provides updated interpretations of codes and regulations to the Development Services Director, City staff and City Council.  Drafts revisions and recommends updates or changes to codes, ordinances and local regulations for the Development Services Director’s review.
  • Prepare and presents code changes relevant to building division to related Building panels, Planning Commission & City Council.

qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university preferably in engineering, architecture or the physical sciences; plus, four years of experience with inspecting and reviewing commercial civil engineered permits.

Special Requirements

  • Certification as a Building Inspector by the International Code Council.
  • Certification as a Building Official by ICC within one year of employment.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid Nebraska driver’s license.

This is a full-time, FLSA exempt (salaried) position.
