Development Services


Under supervision of the Chief Building Official, performs skilled gas and plumbing inspection duties at various stages of construction, alteration and development enforcing compliance with local and national codes and regulations.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Inspects and approves new and existing heating and air conditioning system installations, related equipment and ductwork, gas fuel storage and transport facilities and vehicles to assure compliance with local, State and Federal standards and regulations.  Tests for presence of gas and/or carbon monoxide.
  • Inspects and approves plumbing construction, design, installation, location, maintenance and quality of materials at construction sites to assure compliance with local, State and Federal standards and regulations.  Inspects water lines, sewer taps, water and sewer caps.  Inspects soldering to ensure the absence of lead.
  • Investigates complaints and recommends corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
  • Investigates accidents along with Fire Department to determine causes and to prevent recurrences.
  • Answers questions, explains and enforces laws, ordinances and code provisions to contractors, property owners and the general public.  Maintains open communication and interprets gas, plumbing and mechanical codes for the public, city staff, contractors, architects and inspectors from other jurisdictions.


Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from high school plus five years of experience equal to a journey gas fitter and plumber.

Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • 5 years of experience as a Journeyman Plumber, Gas Fitter.
  • Must obtain Grade VI Backflow certification within one year from date of hire.

40 hours per week
Typical schedule is Monday thru Friday, 8 am to 5 pm.  Evening and weekend hours may be included due to special events.
