Hastings Fire and Rescue


The Firefighter-EMT is a dual role position having emergency medical care responsibilities in addition to firefighter duties.  Depending on the nature of the emergency, the Firefighter-EMT will suppress fires, perform rescues and extrication, provide basic life support medical intervention, and other hazard control activities.  Work is often carried out under stressful conditions in the presence of physical, environmental, contagious disease, and chemical hazards. 


  • High school diploma or GED at time of application
  • By date of hire, must be 18 years of age or older
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • State of Nebraska EMT license must be obtained within 1 year of hire date and maintained throughout the duration of employment.

Lateral entry credit available with the following full-time, career Firefighter-EMT experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years but less than four (4) years:  Step 3
  • Four (4) years or more:  Step 4

Experience must be verifiable.  IFSAC or ProBoard certification to Firefighter I.

Testing is by invitation only. Qualifying applicants will be notified by email.

If offered a conditional offer of employment, the following items must be completed: a thorough background investigation, drug screen, medical examination, physical assessment, psychological examination, fingerprinting, and sign an employment commitment agreement.


The Hastings Fire and Rescue Department operates with three shifts. Each shift is on duty for 24 hours, and off for 48 hours. Employees are required to work holidays and weekends. Wages are based on 54 hours per week.
