DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Under the general supervision of the Environmental Director performs administrative, supervisory and technical work for the Solid Waste Department; directs day-to-day activities of the Solid Waste and Wood Waste processing facility. Assist with various EPA Landfill Superfund sites activities.

qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent. Four years of experiences in an engineering office with field work, or heavy equipment maintenance, or solid waste management, or a combination of relevance experience. A valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by the City's insurance carrier to drive city vehicles.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • SWANA MOLO certification (Manager of Landfill Operations) within 1 year of employment.
  • 40 Hour Haz-Mat Supervisor certification obtained within 1 year of employment.
  • Member of NeSWANA within 6 months of employment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF THE JOB

  • Manages and supervises the activities of Solid Waste operations; recommends and administers policies and procedures.  Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, departmental policies, procedures, and priorities for assigned programs and services.  Prepares and presents staff reports and other necessary correspondence.
  • Participates in the development and administration of budgets for assigned areas; gathers, interprets, and prepares data regarding funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitors expenditures.
  • Trains, motivates, and evaluates personnel; establishes and monitors employee performance objectives; evaluates employee performance; provides or coordinates staff training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; implements discipline procedures; settles grievances; recommends terminations.  Assigns personnel and reviews assignments for conformance with expected quantity and quality of work. Responds to citizen inquiries. Resolves difficult and sensitive complaints by the public and staff. This includes follow up of complaints and implementation of any procedural changes and employee training that may be required.
  • Participates in meetings with administrative staff; develops courses of action to fulfill requested needs; cultivates good community relations by working with civic and other community groups.

HOURS

This is a FLSA exempt position.
Hours will require attending meetings or events which may be in the evening and/or on weekends.
