Seed Library

Seed libraries help build and enrich community while supporting new gardeners and preserving quality seeds that are suitable for our local growing area. Using seeds donated by the Earl May Gardening Center, HPL worked with HMS volunteers to sort and separate seed packets to begin our first seed library. We repurposed our vintage card catalog to house the seeds that are available for anyone to “check out.” Users are encouraged to “return” seeds from plants they’ve grown to be available for “check out” in the next season.

Museum Pass

Hastings Symphony Orchestra Pass

One of the grand prizes for the 2023 Summer Reading Program was a chance to conduct the Hastings Symphony Orchestra at a concert. This initial partnership generated a service of offering free concert tickets to HSO performances that patrons can check out, allowing users access to a community event that they may have otherwise been unable to enjoy.

Free Lunch Program

HPL partnered with Open Table and Catholic Social Services to provide sack lunches to library patrons of all ages to ease food insecurity and provide a meal to those in need. Many children and adults occupy the library for extended periods of time, which means they may find themselves without easy access to food or the ability to leave the premises to find it. Over 1,300 lunches have been given to patrons of the library, and they have all expressed their gratitude for the program.

The Zone: HPL partnered with the YWCA’s afterschool program, the Zone, to offer STEAM focused programs for middle schoolers. We visit the zone once a month with projects that develop skills and knowledge in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics, doing activities such as designing your own stickers and printing them on HPL’s Cricut, or learning easy coding to control small robots. The program began in the spring of 2023 and is well liked and attended by the YWCA kids.

Good Samaritan Village Book Club: A book club for residents of Good Samaritan Village was established in April of 2023. HPL facilitates the discussion and obtains the book club sets for the members to check out. The group decides collectively what they would like to read and discuss throughout the year. The group meets at the Hoeger Library at GSV and has a lively discussion of their chosen titles, fueled by coffee, donuts, and a love of great books.
