What is the Winter Reading Program?
The Winter Reading Program is a reading challenge offered at the library over Christmas break and into the new year. It is a fun incentive that offers prizes to keep everyone reading through the holidays.
This year's Winter Reading Program is a 4 week-4 day challenge. Each age group will have a weekly goal with a weekly prize. Complete the entire challenge to be entered into a grand prize drawing!
How does it work?
The challenge begins December 15th and ends January 15th, and is divided into four age groups:
-
Infants & Toddlers: 4 and younger
-
Kids & Tweens: 5-12
-
Teens: 13-17
-
Adults: 18 and older
There are 4 weeks and 4 days in the challenge. Infants & Toddlers will read 7 books a week for a total of 28 books. Kids & Tweens, Teens, and Adults have the goal of reading 70 minutes a week for a total of 280 minutes. For the last four days, read the daily goal for your age group each day to earn another ticket for the grand prize drawing.
Each group will win weekly prizes for completing the weekly challenge. Infants through Tweens will be able to pick from a mix of slime, squishy fidgets, bracelets, Play-Doh, stickers, and more; Teens can pick their favorite enamel pin from a variety of cute and funny cartoon pins; and Adults can choose from bookmarks, keychains, stickers, self-care items, and more.
After completing the full challenge, readers will be entered into the grand prize drawings with prizes made in the Makerspace:
-
Infants to 1: Bib
-
2 to 4: T-shirt
-
5 to 12: Beanie
-
13 to 17: Beanie
-
18 and older: Mug
At the end of the challenge, you'll receive a ticket through Beanstack to enter into the grand prize drawing. If you are taking part in the Infants & Toddlers group, you will have two options to choose from; please choose the one that corresponds with your child's age. All other groups will have one option for their ticket.
How do I enroll?
Registration opens December 15th. Signing up for Winter Reading is easy and can be done in several ways:
Option 1: Visit the library and stop by the 2nd floor desk! Fill out the registration form on the back of the Winter Reading tracker and a staff member will create an account in Beanstack for you.
Option 2: Register with Beanstack! Log in to Beanstack online or through the Beanstack app. Create your account and add yourself to the Winter Reading challenge. If you already have an account, join the challenge from your home page.
How do I collect my prizes and enter the grand prize drawing?
Check in at the 2nd floor desk to collect your prizes!
If you are using the bookmark tracker, show them to the staff member at the 2nd floor desk. Our staff will use the tracker to input your challenge into Beanstack and initial your tracker. They will also enter your ticket into the grand prize drawing when you hand in your completed tracker.
If you are using the Beanstack app to do the challenge, let staff know your name, and they'll look up your account to confirm your prize. You can enter your grand prize tickets after you complete the challenge. If you have any issues, please ask us at the desk or call us, 402-461-2346.
To enter your tickets into the grand prize drawing, select the prize you'd like a chance to win in Beanstack.
January 15th is the last day weekly prizes can be collected and grand prize drawing tickets can be entered.
The grand prize winners will be drawn and contacted by January 17th.
Are there any special programs?
Yes! Join us on January 2nd from 2pm to 4pm for the Yeti Set Read-A-Thon! Bring your blankets, pillows, and reading buddies and get cozy with cocoa and cookies while you read for the chance to win fun prizes. There will be breaks for yoga, coloring, and Minute to Win It games. Come chill out, get yeti, and read! Ages 8 to 18.
There will also be activities available and open to all throughout the month, such as take and make crafts, word searches, and community coloring projects. These programs are self-guided and can be done at any time as long as supplies last.
Be sure to visit our Events Calendar for our regular programs, including storytimes, S.T.E.A.M Tweens, Teen Underground, book clubs, and more!
What's the community reading goal this year?
Last year, our goal was 24,000 minutes collectively read across all age groups. We blew that out of the water by reaching 63,473 minutes, nearly 40,000 minutes more. This year, we're challenging you to top last year's total by aiming for 70,000 minutes.
Be sure to log all of your reading minutes between December 15th and January 15th. If you're reading books for the Infants & Toddlers group, keep track of all the books your read; an average of 5 minutes per book is used to log the minutes for this group. And if you are using the bookmark tracker, let staff know any additional minutes you read, so we can add them to the total.
