Fire Hydrant Colors

The fire hydrants in Hastings are color coded according to the recommendation of the National Fire Protection Association and the American Works Assoc.

The barrel of the hydrant is painted silver. The bonnet and caps are color coded in accordance to the capacity.

  • Green, like the one pictured above, indicates the flow to be greater than 1000 gallons of water per minute.
  • Orange indicates a flow of 500 to 1000 gallons of water per minute.
  • Red indicates a flow of less than 500 gallons of water per minute.

If a hydrant is painted completely red or completely silver the hydrant has not yet been color coded.
