Summer fire safety and grilling tips

The Hastings Fire Department reminds you of summer fire safety and grilling tips!

PROPANE GRILLS:

  1. Grills should only be used outside.
  2. Grills should be placed well away from home, deck railing and should not be under eaves or overhanging branches or other combustibles.
  3. Keep children and plate away from the grill area.
  4. Never leave your grill unattended.
  5. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.

CHARCOAL GRILLS:

1 through 4 above still apply but the following apply to charcoal grills.

  1. If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter. Never mix charcoal fluid with any other flammable liquid.
  2. Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from a heat source.
  3. When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing of them in a METAL container.

MOWER SAFETY TIPS:

  1. Always be sure the motor is cool before refueling.
  2. Never refuel while the engine is running.
  3. Try not to over fill the tank causing a spill.
  4. Store gasoline in approved containers away from ignition sources and outside of your home.
