Old Highway 281 Viaduct to be Temporarily Closed

The 84-year old Highway 281 viaduct over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks will be temporarily closed by the City of Hastings effective on May 31, 2019.  A report done by the Olsson engineering firm, received by the City Engineer on May16, 2019, indicated that the 2018-19 winter has hastened the need for the City of Hastings to consider the future of the viaduct for vehicular traffic. The temporary closing is to allow the City to look at the alternatives and costs associated with maintaining the viaduct for continued vehicular traffic. The Olsson report indicated that a decision would need to be made within 6 to 9 months regarding the future of the viaduct. Citizens having questions or comments regarding the viaduct and/or its future for vehicular traffic can email their questions or comments to: .
