Police investigating fatal early-morning crash

In the early morning hours of Aug. 6, a single vehicle crash was report to the Hastings 911 Center. At around 1:39 a.m., Hastings Fire and Rescue and the Hastings Police Department were dispatched to the east side of Heartwell Park.

Police determined that a Ford F350 pickup was northbound on Cedar Avenue and failed to stop at the dead-end of Forest Boulevard. The vehicle continued driving northbound into the park, crashing into the concrete retaining wall of the creek running through Heartwell Park.

The driver of the vehicle was a 28-year-old female from Shelton. There were two passengers in the vehicle, a 42-year-old Hastings male and a 37-year-old Grand Island male. The 37-year-old Grand Island man was identified as Derek Lindstrom. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by Hastings Fire and Rescue and he was
transported to Mary Lanning Healthcare where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been scheduled.

The 28-year-old female and the 42-year-old male were both transported to Mary Lanning Healthcare and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Alcohol and speed are believed to be a factor with the crash. The incident is still actively being investigated and there have been no arrests or charges filed at this time.
