Hastings Fire and Rescue responds to two structure fires

Hastings Fire and Rescue is encouraging residents to check their smoke detectors and replace batteries if needed after crews responded to two structure fires in a span of 15 hours.

Ten firefighters responded to the first fire at 135 E. 4th St. at 4:56 p.m. on Tuesday for a reported garage fire. Crews arrived on scene to find heavy smoke coming from a detached garage. Occupants reported that everyone was accounted for, and crews extinguished the fire within five minutes. Firefighters remained on scene to investigate until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. No injuries were reported, and damage was limited to the contents and structure of the garage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters responded to the second fire at 11 Durwood Lane at 7:49 a.m. Wednesday for a reported laundry room fire. Ten firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from a mobile home. Occupants reported everyone was out of the home except for a dog. Crews extinguished the fire within five minutes and remained on scene investigating until 10 a.m. There were no reported injuries, including pets. Damage consisted of fire and smoke damage to the house, and the resident will be displaced. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature.
