Meeting to discuss fire protection grant for manufactured home park

The City of Hastings will hold an open house meeting to inform the public about a state grant to improve fire protection at a manufactured home park.

The meeting will be 5:30-7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8 at the Hastings Public Library, 314 N. Denver Ave., Meeting Room A. The Library will be offering activities for children ages 5 – 12 during that time, so parents can attend the meeting.

The City is working with South Central Economic Development District to apply for Community Development Block Grant funding for new mains to supply firefighting water to the K&K Manufactured Home Park.

The City is working to improve the fire protection of the area by improving the water mains that feed the fire hydrants. To make the project affordable to the home owners and manufactured park owner, the City is applying for a State Community Development Block Grant to pay for 70% of the project cost.

If awarded, the grant could provide up to $450,000 for the fire protection project. The parks’ owner would put up the required match of 30%, or up to $135,000, to secure the assistance.

The new mains, which would be part of the Hastings Utilities system, would be for fire protection only.

The grant requires the City meet with community members to share information about the project and to get their feedback on important needs of the neighborhood.

“We want to make sure the community needs are being met,” said Chad Bunger, Development Services Director for the City of Hastings. “We want to learn about issues, like the fire protection issues, so we can continue to find solutions.”
