HPL completes another successful Summer Reading Program

The Hastings Public Library completed another successful Summer Reading Program with 841 participants.

Of those 841 participants, 53% completed their goal. Summer readers logged a grand total of 451,000 minutes read, which is an 11% increase over last year.

The Summer Reading Program began June 1 with a Block Party. The theme of the 2024 Summer Reading Program was "Adventure Begins at Your Library,” focusing on finding adventures in stories, our community, and far off places.

Samantha Rundle, HPL Programming and Collections Supervisor, said the Summer Reading Program is a great way for children to continue reading progress made during the school year.

“It is very important for children to continue reading during the summer to prevent the summer slide into losing some of what they learned last year,” she said. “During school visits I always remind the kids that they worked so hard this year they wouldn't want to lose some of what they gained this year and they were always enthusiastic about that. Reading in the summer is also a great way for children to choose what they want to read and deepen their enjoyment of reading. By encouraging continuous reading all year we want to inspire kids to become lifelong readers and hopefully lessen the amount of time children spend looking at screens.”

The Beanstack mobile app is a great way to track reading. To use the Beanstack mobile app, patrons simply download the app at https://beanstack.com/mobile-app and search for the Hastings Public Library.

Readers can also access Beanstack at hastingslibrary.beanstack.com. It is a very simple tool useful for tracking reading for all members of the family. The first step is to choose an account creator (typically a caregiver) and set up the account.

That person can then set up their family members as readers based on their ages. This app can be used all year to track reading progress and when there is a special challenge (such as the Summer Reading Program) families can enroll for the program straight from home.
