Fire Prevention Week 2024 is Oct. 6-12
Hastings Fire & Rescue is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association— the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 100 years — to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!”
Fire Prevention Week is Oct. 6-12, 2024 but Hastings Fire and Rescue recognizes the entire month of October as Fire Prevention Month.
According to the NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54%). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Hastings Fire & Rescue offers these key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
1. Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
2. Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
3. Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
4. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
“Hastings Fire and Rescue encourages all residents to actively support the 2024 FPW theme, ‘Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!’ Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a home fire, giving people the time to get out safely,” said Anthony Murphy, HFR Community Risk Reduction Officer. “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.”
Hastings Fire & Rescue is hosting a series of events in support of this year’s FPW campaign, including an open house 9-11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 12 at Fire Station 1, 1313 N. Hastings Ave.
The open house will include station tours and other activities. Hastings Firefighters Local 675 will also be providing a free pancake breakfast.
