Parks and Rec to host 2 Price Is Right events on Jan. 30

The Hastings Parks and Recreation Department is recreating the fun of a long-standing, popular game show with a pair of events on Jan. 30.

The Price Is Right Senior Edition! for ages 55 and older will be 1-3 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30; and The Price Is Right Night Out Edition! for ages 21 and older will be 6:30-8:30 p.m., Jan. 30. Both events are at the Hastings City Auditorium, 400 N. Hastings Ave.

“ ‘The Price is Right’ as a television show engages its audience with fun, challenging games that are exciting for contestants as well as spectators,” Recreation Superintendent Steve Farrens said. “Our twist on this event keeps that structure while also focusing and expanding on the recreation aspect of the experience.”

For this first year, Hastings Parks and Recreation Department incorporated some of the most recognizable components to capture the essence of the gameshow. Those well-known aspects include a massive Plinko board and a custom 36-inch “Big Wheel” for contestants to spin.

Several games from the show have been planned as well.

The big change between the show and the Parks and Recreation Department’s two events is the amount of potential contestants.

On the show, four contestants begin on Bidder’s Row and then one person is replaced each round as another is called up to the stage.

In the Parks and Recreation Department’s version, four new contestants are brought to Bidder’s Row each round, and two of the four will appear in a stage game. Out of the 100 spots at each event, 32 people will have the opportunity to participate in the Bidder’s Row portion of the event.

“It's important to me that our department expands on senior programming in this community with activities that haven’t been offered in the past,” Farrens said. “The Price is Right seemed like a no-brainer for something that could be offered to seniors mid-day during the week. As we were planning, it occurred to us that an event that evening could also be successful and since we were investing in these components, we may as well use them multiple times for one setup.”

The events provide an opportunity to highlight local businesses.

The Adams County Visitors Bureau is the title sponsor for both events. As part of the sponsorship, the ACVB has provided funds to purchase prizes from local businesses.

Additionally, Hastings Parks and Rec has procured prizes and sponsorships from businesses such as Nelson Furniture, Pastime Lanes, Coach’s Corner, and Allo.

Prize donations and sponsorships are still needed and will be accepted until Jan. 17.

While there are no brand-new cars, there is a lot of value for the $10 admission. Registration can be done at this link.
