Council meeting start time moving to 6 p.m., worksession to be March 1
The starting time for Hastings City Council meetings and work sessions will soon be moving to 6 p.m.
The new starting time, which takes effect with the March 10 regular council meeting, is 30 minutes later than the previous starting time.
Council members voted 8-0 during their Feb. 10 meeting to approve Resolution No. 2025-05, which authorized the change.
Introducing the item during the Feb. 10 council meeting, Mayor Jay Beckby said moving back the meeting starting time was a request from the public.
“I ran on this as a campaign promise that I wanted to make City Council meetings more accessible to people who got off work at 5,” he said. “We came up with 6 o’clock.”
Council president Steve Huntley said starting council meetings at 6 p.m., will give residents who work out of town or who would like to clean up after work more time to get to meetings.
Implementation of the later meeting starting time comes not long after a Saturday morning worksession. The Hastings City Council worksession, which takes the place of the council’s annual retreat, is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m., Saturday March 1 at the Hastings Public Library, 314 N. Denver Ave.
The agenda includes the following discussion items:
1. Needs of the City
2. Discussion Topics
Public Safety
Public Services
Public Amenities
3. Council Goals
4. Budget
5. Summary
