911 Center
The E-911 Center is part of the Hastings Police Department and its operations serve the City Fire Departments, Rural Fire Departments, and Emergency Management. The E-911 Center, in large part, determines the effectiveness and efficiency of the agencies who use its services. Furthermore, the manner in which callers are treated by the personnel of the center, molds publics' perception concerning service providers and the City of Hastings. Consequently, it is imperative that the E-911 Center be responsive to the needs of those it serves.
9-1-1 USE IT ... DON'T ABUSE IT!
What is 9-1-1?
9-1-1 is the emergency telephone number system which links callers to the appropriate emergency service - Police, Fire or Ambulance. Calling 9-1-1 helps ensure you reach the emergency service you require as quickly as possible.
What is an Emergency?
A situation where the safety of people or property is at risk. Examples of 9-1-1 emergencies include: a fire; crime in progress; or a medical crisis.
What is NOT an Emergency?
It is not an emergency when the situation is not dangerous and immediate action is not necessary. Examples of a non-emergency situation include: an automobile accident where an injury has not occurred; after a crime has been committed and you believe that the offender has left the scene; and follow-up on an auto theft report. If the emergency is not life threatening, please take the time to locate the proper non-emergency phone number. Some are listed below.
What Happens when you call 9-1-1?
When you dial 9-1-1 your call is answered by professionally trained dispatchers. The 9-1-1 telephone system has an Automatic Location Identification System and an Automatic Number Identification System (ANI/ALI) which lets the dispatcher know the address and telephone number of the caller. If the caller is unable to speak, police will be dispatched to the location.
If you call from a cellular phone, ANI/ALI information will NOT be available to the dispatcher. Try to remain calm and give your exact location
The caller must be prepared to give the following information:
- Which service is required - Fire, Police or Ambulance.
- Where the emergency has occurred - the full address including the name of the city or town is important as there are some similar street names within Hastings and Adams County.
The Hastings 911 Center will then dispatch the appropriate agency or agencies.
