Parks and Rec to hold new Pop Culture Showcase event
The City of Hastings Parks & Recreation Department will hold the inaugural Pop Culture Showcase, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday Dec. 7, at the Hastings City Auditorium, 400 N. Hastings Ave.
Admission is free for shoppers.
Recreation Superintendent Steve Farrens said the idea for the Pop Culture Showcase came after a number of several Parks and Rec events in the last year.
“It’s evident there is a pop culture following in Hastings, as displayed at our programming such as Mario Party and May the Fourth, and at nearby events such as the Tri-City Comic Con,” Farrens said. “We saw an opportunity to offer an event that could be beneficial to the community as they try and shop local leading up to the holidays.”
With this being the first year for the event, it is starting small with businesses from the local area that provide pop culture merchandise such as comic books, movies, art, figurines and collectibles.
“If our hunch is correct that this event will have legs, we will move forward in year two with more artists and vendors from outside the area,” Farrens said. “There will also be a number of local personalities visiting throughout the day.”
Vendors include The Coin Guy, the Comic Cop, Cryptid Creations, and Ice 101 Comics, among others.
Special guests include:
- 10 a.m. to noon: KSNB Local 4 personality Alissa Harrington
- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: KHAS Radio personality Brandon McDermott
- noon to 2 p.m.: KSNB Local 4 personality Travis Klanecky
- 1-3 p.m.: Tri-City Comic Con co-founder and artist Gabe Perez
- 2-4 p.m.: KSNB Local 4 personality Ian Mason
The deadline for vendors to register is Friday, Nov. 29.
