Arbor Day program to take place at Hawthorne Elementary
The City of Hastings Arbor Day program will start at 2 p.m. at Hawthorne Elementary on Friday, April 25 at 2200 W. Ninth St.
Volunteers will plant an Urban Pinnacle Bur Oak tree next to the school’s front entrance drop-off area. This shade tree is ideal for driveways with its narrow upright shape.
Hastings Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hassenstab said when it comes to trees, his department is a resource for the community.
“The role we play is education about trees and how trees benefit the community and residents,” Hassenstab said. “If we can be a resource, we will do that.”
During the Arbor Day program, Parks and Recreation staff members will speak about the history of Arbor Day, the value of trees and proper tree care. City of Hastings Public Information Manager Tony Herrman will read a city proclamation for Arbor Day.
This year marks the 35th year that Hastings is a Tree City community. To receive Tree City recognition, a community must meet four standards:
- Maintain a tree board or department
- Have a community tree ordinance
- Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
- Celebrate Arbor Day
