Quiet crossing work to resume at Denver and Lincoln avenues

Work will soon resume at the Denver and Lincoln Avenue BNSF Railway crossings as part of the city’s ongoing Quiet Crossing project.

Werner Construction of Hastings will resume work on Phase 2 of the Quiet Crossing project on Monday, May 5 at the Denver Avenue crossing.

BNSF Railway will start work on Phase 2 of the Quiet Crossing late during the week of May 5-9 on the Lincoln Avenue crossing.

The project is funded by the half-cent sales tax.

Phases of Quiet Zone Work
Phase 1 was the Hastings Avenue and Pine Avenue crossings with the BNSF.
Phase 2 includes the Lincoln Avenue, Denver Avenue and California Avenue crossings with the BNSF.
Phase 3 will be in Fiscal Year 2025-2026 budget for the Colorado Avenue and Elm Avenue crossings.

Denver Avenue Crossing

Werner is starting work on Denver Avenue between South Street and First Street on Monday May 5. That work includes driveway, pavement and sidewalk removals and then new concrete driveways, paving and sidewalks. Werner’s work on Denver Avenue is anticipated to take four weeks (weather dependent). BNSF will follow Werner and replace the railroad tracks through the crossing and upgrade from wooden crossing planks to concrete crossing pads – likely the first week of June. Then the BNSF’s asphalt contractor will place asphalt between the new concrete pavement and the new railroad crossing. The Denver Avenue crossing is anticipated to be closed for up to five or six weeks (again weather and railroad scheduling).

The parking lot on the southeast side of project will remain open for the time being but will be closed when curb and concrete work is underway. Access then, will be from St. Joseph Avenue and South Street.

The Amtrak parking lot will be closed on Denver Avenue and will be an in-and-out drive from First Street. The drive to the northwest will be closed and access will be from Hastings Avenue.

Lincoln Avenue Crossing
BNSF has a crew scheduled to replace the railroad tracks through the crossing and upgrade from wooden crossing planks. As soon as BNSF is done at Denver Avenue, Werner will shift to the Lincoln Crossing to do their work, likely toward the end of the week of May 5-9. Then BNSF will schedule the asphalt contractor to fill in the gap between the new concrete and the new Lincoln crossing. Scheduling of the work will cause both the Denver Avenue and Lincoln Avenue crossings to be closed simultaneously. Lincoln Avenue is anticipated to re-open before Memorial Day.
Your cooperation during this period of inconvenience will be appreciated.
Lincoln Avenue will be closed at the medians that were completed last year both on the North and South of the tracks. Access to existing driveways will remain open.

California Avenue Crossing
Werner will move onto the California Avenue crossing as work continues. Werner’s work at California Avenue should only take one or two weeks. The crossing will be closed for Werner to work and then re-open. BNSF will follow up and rework the crossing and have their asphalt contractor place asphalt between the existing street and the new crossing. We anticipate that the closure for the railroad work will be less than one week.
