721 N. Briggs Ave. wins Halloween Light Fight contest again

This year’s winning display for the Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight received a little inspiration from a heavy metal icon.

Grant and Tammi Jacobsen received the most votes among the 13 competitors in this year’s Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight contest with an ancient Egyptian-themed display at their house, 721 N. Briggs Ave.

Grant said he got the idea for the Egyptian theme thinking about his brother’s favorite band, Iron Maiden. Ancient Egyptian imagery is among the various themes Eddie has appeared with on Iron Maiden album covers.

Voting took place Oct. 17-26 on the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page. One like equaled one point, a comment was worth two points and a share was worth three points.

The Jacobsens’ house received 116 reactions, 83 comments and more than 1,300 shares.

“The support was awesome,” Grant said.

The Jacobsens are no strangers to winning the Hastings Parks and Recreation Department’s Halloween Light Fight, having also won in 2020, 2021 and 2024. The Jacobsens’ display in 2024 had a football theme.

Other homes participating in the contest included 926 N. Washington Ave., 6115 Meander Circle, 701 Shoreside Cove, 316 E. Sixth St., 1942 Boyce St., 928 W. 10th St., 1425 MacArthur Road, 1815 W. Ninth St., 1735 W. Fifth St., 303 E. 12th St., 909 N. Colorado Ave., and 918 N. Colorado Ave. Videos of each entry are available on the Parks and Recreation Department’s Facebook page.

As winners, the Jacobsens received $125 in gift cards from New York Pizza & Italian Restaurant, which sponsored this year’s prize. The Jacobsens also received a trophy made by Hastings Parks crews.

Recreation Coordinator Seth Webster presented Grant with the prizes on the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 27.
