Local librarian honored with statewide award for innovation and leadership

The Hastings Public Library is proud to announce that Samantha Rundle, Programming & Collections Supervisor, has been awarded the Mad Hatter Award by the Nebraska Library Association’s Services for Children and Young People (SCYP) section.

The Mad Hatter Award is presented annually to one individual in Nebraska who demonstrates imaginative interpretation of library services, develops innovative and creative programs for children and young adults, and contributes to the library profession beyond their local community.

Rundle’s nomination highlighted her passion and creativity, stating:

“Sam creates so many activities for youth in the Hastings area. She is also active statewide through her work as Chair of the Golden Sower Award Committee and shares her expertise through statewide training programs such as the Nebraska Library Commission’s NCompass Live. She has also presented many times at state conferences.”

From interactive reading programs and STEAM challenges to large-scale community events, Rundle’s work has helped make the Hastings Public Library a vibrant and welcoming space for families and young readers. Her leadership extends beyond Hastings, inspiring librarians across the state through collaboration, mentorship, and professional development.

Rundle accepted the award at the Nebraska Library Association’s annual conference in York on Oct. 23, 2025.

Library Director Kelly Reisig shared her admiration for Rundle’s accomplishments:

“A successful library takes the talent of many librarians to make it truly special,” said Reisig. “And Sam is hands down one of the best. Her creativity and dedication shine through everything she does, and we are truly blessed to have her on our team.”
