D Street to close one block east and west of Elm Ave for multiple weeks

Werner Construction Co. and Van Kirk Bros Contracting, respective contractor and subcontractor for the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Hastings Southeast project, are planning to close D Street for a block on either side of Elm Avenue and about a block of Spencer Avenue south of D Street beginning on Monday, Jan. 5.

The closure is for sanitary sewer, storm sewer and water main work and is anticipated to last at least four weeks. The project is part of the larger U.S. Highway 6 Hastings Southeast project that includes grading, concrete pavement, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, street lights, traffic signals and water main work. Most of the work will be in the south lane of D Street.

  • Sanitary Sewer: Construction of a sanitary sewer manhole in the center of D Street between Elm Avenue and the exit driveway from The Children’s Ark day care. Sanitary sewer pipe will then be laid to the north for a future sanitary sewer connection.
  • Storm Sewer: Most of the storm sewer work this time will be south of the center of D Street east of Elm Avenue and across Spencer Avenue. There is a storm sewer pipe crossing D Street east of Spencer Avenue that will be built just to the north of the centerline of D Street.
  • Water Main: All of the water main work is in the southern portion of D Street.

Sections of the closed roads may reopen as work there is completed.

While the section of D Street east of Elm Avenue is closed, traffic to and from The Children’s Ark – and all Good Samaritan Society-Hastings Village properties – will be through a signed detour from South Street (U.S. Highway 6) and First Avenue. During the closure, access to the Hastings Dog Park will only be available from the south on Spencer Avenue by way of H Street.

As part of the detour, traffic exiting The Children’s Ark child care drop off driveway will turn east onto D Street.

The City of Hastings and contractor will work together to place barricades, cones and signs to guide traffic and keep the work area safe.
