Hastings Public Library Offers Three Ways for Young Readers to Read, Discover, and Grow This Fall
Young readers have plenty of opportunities to build their reading skills and discover new books at Hastings Public Library this fall with two returning reading challenges and a brand new reading program.
Reading Dragons began Sept. 1 and runs through April 30 for children ages 5–15. Participants earn collectible cards by reading and logging their minutes. As children reach reading milestones, they can collect cards featuring different members of the Reading Dragons family, including dragons, unicorns, and griffins. The program encourages children to make reading a regular part of their routine while giving them something fun to collect along the way.
The Golden Sower Challenge is also underway and is available through April 15. This program encourages Nebraska students to read a selection of books nominated for the annual Golden Sower Award and participate in the statewide readers’ choice program. Children can choose from the books in their designated age category, then vote for their favorite title, earning buttons and chances to win a grand prize drawing for each of the ten titles they read.
Beginning Oct. 1, Hastings Public Library will launch Growing Readers, a new reading program designed for children ages 2–7 who have completed the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge. Growing Readers helps children transition from counting the number of books they read to focusing on the time they spend reading, combining art, library services, and the outdoors to build positive reading habits and grow their love of reading.
“Reading looks different for every child, and we want to give kids multiple ways to find joy in books,” said Sam Rundle, Programming and Collections Supervisor at HPL. “Each of these programs approaches reading a little differently. So, whether they're reading for minutes, discovering award-nominated books, or collecting their favorite Reading Dragon cards, these programs are all about helping children build a lasting love of reading.”
