Hastings Public Library Announces Updates to Hoopla Service
Hastings Public Library is making several updates to its Hoopla digital library service designed to help stretch available funds across more patrons and provide more consistent access to digital materials.
Beginning Oct. 19, the monthly number of Hoopla checkouts available per library card will change from 10 to 6. While this represents a decrease in the number of monthly checkouts, the new limit remains higher than those offered by several nearby libraries serving communities of 40,000 or more residents.
The library is also adding Instant Bundles, which provide access to select popular titles even when the daily limit is met. These titles are often more expensive for libraries to provide, making Instant Bundles a cost-effective way to expand access to high-demand materials while preserving regular checkout availability.
The changes come as Hastings Public Library has experienced increased demand for Hoopla. The service has regularly reached its daily spending limit early in the day, meaning patrons attempting to borrow materials later may be unable to access the service until the following day.
“Our goal is to provide the best digital library experience we can for our community,” said Kelly Reisig, Hastings Public Library Director. “These changes will help us make our available resources go further and, hopefully, allow more patrons to access Hoopla throughout the month.”
The adjustments were recommended by Hastings Public Library’s Hoopla account team based on usage patterns and strategies that have helped other libraries manage daily spending limits while maintaining access to popular digital materials.
Hoopla offers Hastings Public Library cardholders access to a wide selection of eBooks, audiobooks, comics, movies, television shows, and music. Audiobooks are particularly popular among Hastings patrons, with more than 10,000 audiobook checkouts recorded so far this calendar year.
“We know that changing a monthly limit may be disappointing for some patrons,” said Reisig. “At the same time, we want to make sure Hoopla remains a resource that can be used by as many people in our community as possible. These changes are intended to help us balance demand, availability, and the cost of providing the service.”
Hastings Public Library will continue to monitor Hoopla usage and make adjustments as needed to provide broad and sustainable access to digital materials.
