Laser Cutter
Etch text and designs and cut out shapes in a wide variety of materials with the Epilog Zing 24 (C02 Laser Cutter). Its 12" x 24" work area allows you to create an array of projects with a state-of-the-art, digitally controlled laser technology.
Age Requirements & Certification:
Certification training with library staff is required to use the laser cutter. Certification takes approximately one hour and may be scheduled in advance by calling the library at (402) 461-2346 or by scheduling an appointment online via our Library Calendar.
Users 18 years and older can use the laser cutter unsupervised after completing certification. Anyone ages 14-17 is welcome to use the machine if they are accompanied by an adult 18 and older who has also been certified.
Things to Know:
Once you are certified on the laser cutter, you will be able to cut and engrave your designs on wood and other materials to create a variety of projects such as decorative shadow boxes, coasters, ornaments, or other personalized gifts.
In addition to wood, there are many materials that can be used in the laser cutter, including acrylic, anodized aluminum, cardstock, cardboard, cork, glass, leather, and much more. You can bring in your own materials to use without cost; however, the material must be approved by staff. Any approved material can be engraved on. Materials that can be cut are: wood, acrylic, paper, leather, fabric, and cork and must be under 1/4" thick.
You can create a digital design at home and then import the file to the laser cutter software to cut or etch your project. Compatible file formats include: .svg, .jpeg, .png, .pdf, or .cdr. Or create your project at the library with the design software available on the Makerspace computers.
