Tank removal at former service station to begin

Removal of two fuel tanks at the former Theis Auto Care service station will take place soon, followed by demolition of the service station building.

General Excavating of Lincoln will mobilize equipment on Monday April 3 to the building at 302 N. Denver Ave. The process will begin with concrete removal, followed by the removal of the tanks – 8,000 and 5,000 gallons apiece – on Wednesday with the oversight of the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office. The process is expected to take until Friday April 7 to complete.

Gana Trucking of Martell is scheduled to begin demolition of the service station building on Tuesday April 11. That process is expected to take eight business days.

The sidewalks and parallel parking spots adjacent to the property will be blocked off during the work.

Temporary lane and alley closures may occur during the process.

On April 10, between the tank removal and demolition, Hastings Fire and Rescue will use the building as a training site. The training will include forcible entry evolutions but not include live fire.

Following demolition, the site will be seeded with grass.

The Hastings Public Library Foundation purchased the property at 302 N. Denver Ave., in May 2022 with the intent that the property be developed for library programming and public use.

Members of the Hastings City Council voted 8-0 at their regular meeting Sept. 27, 2022 to accept the transfer of property from the Library Foundation.

Funds for the purchase of the property were raised by the Library Foundation.

Plans for the property at 302 N. Denver Ave., have not yet been developed.
