3rd St. lights now flashing, side streets to be closed during work

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is updating the traffic signals on Burlington Avenue at Second, Third, Seventh, Ninth, 12th, 14th and 16th Streets as well as at North Shore Drive.

The updating of traffic signals is anticipated to be three or four days per location.

The first change to traffic signals occurred when the signals at Second Street and Burlington Avenue were taken out of service on Monday, Nov. 27.  The signals at the intersection are back in operation.

Project contractor IES Commercial Inc., of Holdrege turned the traffic signals into flashing mode at the Third Street intersection on the afternoon of Thursday, Dec. 7.

Left-hand turns from Third Street onto Burlington Avenue are currently prohibited. All traffic approaching Burlington Avenue is restricted to right turns only to improve intersection safety.

The north/south signals are flashing yellow. The east/west signals are flashing red.

The contractor is currently working on the signals at the Seventh Street intersection.

Work zone traffic control is being revised for the safety of motorists while signals are out-of-service. Traffic control was modified this afternoon from right turns only to closing Seventh Street for the block closest to Burlington Avenue to approaching traffic. Eliminating approach traffic on 7th Street will cause motorists to travel out of their way, but the closure is being done to improve safety.

As the project progresses north, other side streets will be completely closed in the block closest to Burlington Avenue while work takes place at each respective intersection. The left turn lanes on Burlington Avenue will also be closed.

The updated signals include protected left turns on:

·         Seventh Street in the north/south direction

·         12th Street in the north/south Direction

·         14th Street in all directions

·         16th Street in the north/south direction

·         North Shore Drive in the north/south direction

The project is anticipated to be completed in early 2024. IES Commercial Inc., of Holdrege is the contractor for this project. Work also includes updating traffic signal controllers at Second, Third, and Ninth Streets.
