Explosion at 618 S. Boston Ave.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023,
the Hastings Police Department along with Hastings Fire & Rescue responded to 618 South Boston Ave. The initial 911 caller reported an explosion within the residence. Upon initial arrival on scene, there were secondary explosions occurring within the home. The residence collapsed and was destroyed due to these explosions. Based upon initial observations and information obtained early within the investigation, it was determined that the explosions were likely due to destructive devices. The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad and the Nebraska State Fire Marshals Office were contacted to assist.

Gas service was initially shut off to all residences on the 600 Block of South Boston Ave. After it was determined the explosion was not caused by a gas leak, gas was turned on to all residences except 614, 618 and 620 S. Boston Ave., which are the location of the explosion and the residences directly to the north and south.

Since the initial response, crews have been working to locate additional destructive devices and explosive material, so a thorough investigation can be completed and the safety of all ensured. At this time an unidentified, deceased person has been located within the debris. The Adams County Attorney’s Office/Coroner has been contacted due to the death investigation that the Hastings Police Department is overseeing. Due to the level of destruction and the necessity to thoroughly secure and investigate the scene, agencies will remain there for several more hours. The Nebraska State Patrol Bomb Squad has been assisting in the collection of evidence, testing of destructive devices and safe disposal of identified devices, at a controlled location.

Our thoughts are with all individuals affected by this tragedy, and we thank all first responders, assisting agencies and our community for their support.
