9th Street reopens, 16th Street to close as part of upgrades

Ninth Street signals wrap up

The Nebraska Department of Transportation’s contractor - IES Commercial, Inc. of Holdrege took the traffic signal at Burlington Ave & Ninth Street out-of-service on Thursday, Feb. 29 and completed the upgrade work on Tuesday, March 5. The intersection was upgraded with all new signal cable, a new controller, and added a radio antenna for interconnect.

The NDOT Traffic Signal engineers have scheduled Thursday afternoon, March 7, to program the controller and take the signals from flash mode to normal operation. Now that the signals are operating normally, the contractor took down the signs, cones, and barricades.

16th Street signals to start

The contractor will then move to Burlington Avenue and 16th Street. The signals at the intersection will be taken out-of-service on Monday, March 11. The existing traffic signal poles in the southwest and northeast corners of the intersection are being replaced with new poles with longer mast arms to accommodate new traffic signal heads. The new signal heads will have left turn arrows to allow for protected left turns for Burlington Avenue traffic to turn left onto 16th Street.

The project is also replacing all the signal cable, installing a new controller, adding antennas for interconnect, and upgrading to radar vehicle detection.

While the traffic signals are offline time, 16th Street will be closed to traffic on each side of Burlington Avenue. During the signal upgrade work, there will also be outside lane closures on Burlington Avenue.

The NDOT and Contractor have studied the work involved and believe the upgrades can be completed in two weeks. They are hoping to finish the upgrade work and put the signals into temporary flash mode by Friday, March 22. The goal is to schedule the NDOT’s Traffic Signal Engineers to program the signals during the first part of the week of March 25.

It is recommended that motorists that normally use 16th Street consider alternate routes while the intersection is closed. Motorists on Burlington Avenue are reminded that road construction work sites should be driven carefully, especially when traffic on Burlington Avenue may be restricted to one lane in each direction for some of the work.
