Political candidate sign summary
As the election season approaches for local, state, and federal elections, the City of Hastings would like to provide candidates and their supporters with information on regulations for signs that are customarily used for political campaigns.
The City of Hastings regulates signs, including poster signs, which typically are used for political campaigns. The purpose of the regulations is to maintain safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, and to preserve the character and integrity of neighborhoods, commercial areas, and roadways. The complete regulations can be found in the City’s Code of Ordinances in Section 34-309.
Here is a summary of the applicable regulations for temporary signs:
- All sign(s) must remain on private property. The Adams County and City of Hastings online mapping site can be used to generally determine the line between private property and public right-of-way. It is available here.
- All sign(s) cannot obstruct the vision clearance zone, as defined by the City Code of Ordinance Section 34-305(4)(d).
- Poster signs must be at least five feet back from all property lines along the right-of-way and three feet from other property lines.
- Poster signs cannot be more than eight square feet in area.
- Please note that the signs listed in Section 34-309.02(5) are prohibited in all zoning districts in the City of Hastings.
