Sewer, water work to occur on South Street between Lincoln and Denver

South Street will be closed to traffic between Lincoln and Denver avenues at East South Street beginning Tuesday, April 2 while work is done to repair damaged sewer and water mains. A detour will direct traffic around the construction area.

The sewer main near the intersection of East South Street and South Lincoln Avenue is cracked. Sewer issues arose after a nearby water main leaked, washing away dirt and leaving the sewer main, which is about 15-feet deep, exposed with a void under the concrete around the mains about the size of a car.

The scope and the duration of the work are still being determined.

Both the water and sewer mains are 8 inches in diameter.

A Hastings Utilities water crew repaired a bad valve and broken main in the affected area on the afternoon and evening of Friday, March 29.

A couple sewer customers were contacted to see if there were any service issues and none were found, water customers could have experienced low pressure during the break and no water during the shutdown and repairs.

The mains will be isolated to minimize the loss of service to surrounding customers.

Hastings Utilities and outside contractors are doing the main repair. The Street Department will replace the concrete. A HU crew will do the water and an outside contractor will do the sewer when it is determined if the repair can be done to the inside of the main or if the outside needs exposed.
