Traffic signal work finishing at North Shore, beginning at 12th Street

Traffic Signal Upgrade at U.S. Highway 34/281 and North Shore Drive

The Nebraska Department of Transportation’s contractor - IES Commercial, Inc. of Holdrege finished upgrading the traffic signals and placed them into temporary flash mode on Thursday, April 11. 

  • The upgrade included a new traffic signal pole, a longer mast arm, and a left turn signal head in the northwest corner of the intersection for northbound traffic. 
  • The left turn signal head for southbound traffic was also replaced. 
  • All signal cable was replaced, a new controller was installed, and antennas were added for interconnect.  

NDOT traffic engineers are currently scheduled to program the signals at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17. Once the signals are programmed and back in normal operation, the construction barricades, cones & signs will be removed, and the intersection will be fully opened to traffic.

Traffic Signal Upgrade at 12th Street and Burlington Avenue

The contractor moved to the intersection Monday, April 15. 

A new traffic-signal pole is being placed in the southwest corner of the intersection to accommodate a longer mast arm and left turn signal head for southbound traffic. 

A left turn signal head is also being installed for northbound traffic.  

All signal cable will be replaced, a new controller installed and antennas added for interconnect. 

Radar detection is being added for all approaching traffic lanes. 

The left turn signal heads for traffic on Burlington Avenue will include the flashing yellow left turn arrows.

When the traffic signal is out-of-service later this week:

  • The outside lanes of 12th Street at Burlington Avenue will be closed beginning Wednesday, April 17. 
  • There will be times where the right lane of southbound traffic on Burlington Avenue will be closed. 
  • Burlington Avenue traffic will be allowed to go through the intersection or turn right, but will not be able to turn left. 
  • 12th Street traffic will be able to turn right onto Burlington Avenue, but will not be able to cross or turn left. 

The work at 12th Street and Burlington Avenue is anticipated to take less than two weeks.
