Arbor Day program to take place at St. Michael's Elementary

The City of Hastings Arbor Day program will start at 1:30 pm at St. Michael’s Elementary on Friday, April 26 at 715 Creighton Ave.

Volunteers will plant a Swamp White Oak and Catalpa tree next to the school’s garden. These are shade trees that will be planted by the playground, in the northwest portion of the school property.

City Tree Board member Joe Kindig, who owns a tree nursey and is providing the trees, suggested the collaboration with Hastings Catholic Schools. Funds for both of the trees were donated by Hastings Sunrise Rotary.

Hastings Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hassenstab said when it comes to trees, his department is a resource for the community.

“The role we play is education about trees and how trees benefit the community and residents,” Hassenstab said. “If we can be a resource, we will do that.”

During the Arbor Day program, Parks and Recreation staff members will speak about the history of Arbor Day, the value of trees and proper tree care. Hastings City Councilman Marc Rowan, the council’s Tree Board liaison will read a city proclamation for Arbor Day.

This year marks the 34th year that Hastings is a Tree City community. To receive Tree City recognition, a community must meet four standards:

  • Maintain a tree board or department
  • Have a community tree ordinance
  • Spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
  • Celebrate Arbor Day
